拉脱维亚流行病学家Ņikita Trojanskis 1月19日在接受该国电视台采访时表示，由于很大一部分人口仍未接种疫苗，预计Omicron变种在拉脱维亚的传播时间将长于其他国家。
Trojanskis说，这次爆发可能至少会持续到2月底。他补充说，尽管这一新变种病毒不像DELTA那样危险，但由于它具有高度传染性，许多人仍可能会住院接受治疗。
他说：“我认为，2月中旬的住院率可能会很高，届时会有1千2百到1千3百人住院。其他的迹象也表明，基于我们对抗这种病毒的方式，也可能会有高达3000名的患者住院。”
他表示，如果拉脱维亚想要限制Omicron的传播，目前的措施是不够的。禁用织物口罩的决定只是朝着正确方向迈出的一步，但还不够。
他说：“我认为，在这一个半月里，我们必须放弃通常的舒适生活——停止社交生活，停止文化生活，一定要限制室内和室外的体育活动。”
Trojanskis同时还表示，在4到6个月的时间内，新冠状病毒可能会再次演变出新的变种。不过，由于民众在第一波中获得了更多的免疫力，在接下来的一波传播中，住院的人数可能不会太高。
