美国国务院一位高级官员周四表示，在美国上空飞行了 8 天的中国气球携带有能够收集信号情报的 “ 多个天线 ”，而且事实证明气球制造商与中国军方有直接联系。
这位官员说，高空 U-2战机拍摄的照片证实了装备的存在，包括 “ 可能能够收集和定位通信的……多个天线 ”，以及 “ 用于产生足以运行多个主动情报收集传感器所需能量的太阳能电池板 ”。这些装备 “ 明显不同于 ” 气象气球上的设备。
这位官员说，根据中国人民解放军官方采购门户网站发布的信息，美国相信，该气球制造商 “ 与中国军方有直接关系，是（中国人民解放军）认可的供应商 ”。
这位官员说，这些气球是 “ 为执行监视行动而开发的 ” 舰队的一部分，这些行动通常是在军方的指示下进行的。
这位官员说：“ 美国还将探讨对支持气球侵入美国领空的与解放军有关的中国实体采取行动。”“ 我们还将着眼于更广泛的努力，以揭露和解决中国更大规模的监控活动，这些活动对我们的国家安全以及我们的盟友和合作伙伴构成了威胁。”
