据美联社报道，美国传染病专家福奇周二在国会山作证时愤怒地驳斥了肯塔基州共和党籍参议员兰德·保罗（Rand Paul），否认了保罗所暗示的美国资助了中国一家实验室的研究，而这家实验室可能引发了新冠肺炎疫情。
在听证会上，保罗暗示福奇曾在国会撒谎，他在 5 月否认美国国立卫生研究院资助了武汉病毒研究所进行所谓的“功能获得”研究——在实验室中增强病毒以研究其在现实世界中的潜在影响的做法。美国情报机构目前正在探索因意外而致全球大流行的可能性。
“我没有在国会面前撒谎。我从来都没有撒过谎。当然不会在国会面前撒谎。”福奇在参议院卫生、教育、劳工和养老金委员会作证时对保罗说，参议员提到这项研究是一种完全不同的病毒，与导致新冠状病毒爆发的病毒完全不同。
福奇说：“保罗参议员，坦率地说，您根本不知道自己在说什么。我想正式地说，您根本不知道您在说什么。”
他还说：“如果有谁在这里撒谎，参议员，那就是您。”
